The ubiquitous yin-yang symbol holds its roots in Taoism/Daoism, a Chinese religion and philosophy. The yin, the dark swirl, is associated with shadows, femininity, and the trough of a wave; the yang, the light swirl, represents brightness, passion and growth. John Bellaimey explains why we all contain the spirit of yin and of yang -- and how we can achieve a balance of both in our lives.

How does evolution really work? Actually, not how some of our common evolutionary metaphors would have us believe. For instance, it's species, not individual organisms, that adapt to produce evolution, and genes don't "want" to be passed on -- a gene can't want anything at all! Alex Gendler sets the record straight on the finer points of evolution.

ZOHNERISM : TWISTING FACTS TO CONFUSE PEOPLE

*Twisting of simple facts to confuse people*.

In 1997, 14 year old Nathan Zohner presented his science fair project to his classmates, seeking to ban a highly toxic chemical from it’s everyday use.

The chemical in question? *Dihydrogen monoxide*.

Throughout his presentation, Zohner provided his audience scientifically correct evidence as to why this chemical should be banned.

He explained that dihydrogen monoxide:

Causes severe burns while it’s in gaseous form.

Corrodes and rusts metals.

Kills countless amounts of people annually.

Is commonly found in tumors, acid rain etc.

Causes excessive urination and bloating if consumed.

Zohner also noted that the chemical is able to kill you if you depend on it and then experience an extended withdrawal.

*He then asked his classmates if they actually wanted to ban dihydrogen monoxide*.

And so *43 out of the 50 children* present voted to ban this clearly toxic chemical.

However…this chemical isn’t typically considered toxic at all.

*In fact, dihydrogen monoxide is simply an unconventional name for water*.

Nathan Zohner’s experiment wasn’t a legitimate attempt to ban water, but instead *an experiment to get a representation of how gullible people can really be*.

Also, all of the points that Zohner used to convey his point were 100% factually correct; he just skewed all of the information in his favor by omitting certain facts.

One journalist eventually dubbed this event as *Zohnerism*, where *true facts are misled towards false conclusions*.

*And this occurs a lot more often than you think, especially when politicians, conspiracy theorists, etc., use proven facts to persuade people into believing false claims*.

*The fact that people can mislead, and be misled so easily, is highly unsettling*.

PRACTICAL ADVICE FROM HEAD OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Now something practical and honest from the :
Head of the Infectious Disease Clinic, University of Maryland,
USA:

1. We may have to live with C19 for months or years. Let's not deny it or panic. Let's not make our lives useless. Let's learn to live with this fact.

2. You can't destroy C19 viruses that have penetrated cell walls, drinking gallons of hot water - you'll just go to the bathroom more often.

3. Washing hands and maintaining a
two-metre physical distance is the best method for your protection.

4. If you don't have a C19 patient at home, there's no need to disinfect the surfaces at your house.

5. Packaged cargo, gas pumps, shopping carts and ATMs do not cause infection.
Wash your hands, live your life as usual.

6. C19 is not a food infection. It is associated with drops of infection like the ‘flu. There is no demonstrated risk that C19 is transmitted by ordering food.

7. You can lose your sense of smell with a lot of allergies and viral infections. This is only a non-specific symptom of C19.

8. Once at home, you don't need to change your clothes urgently and go shower!
Purity is a virtue, paranoia is not!

9. The C19 virus doesn't hang in the air. This is a respiratory droplet infection that requires close contact.

10. The air is clean, you can walk through the gardens (just keeping your physical protection distance), through parks.

11. It is sufficient to use normal soap against C19, not antibacterial soap. This is a virus, not a bacteria.

12. You don't have to worry about your food orders. But you can heat it all up in the microwave, if you wish.

13. The chances of bringing C19 home with your shoes is like being struck by lightning twice in a day. I've been working against viruses for 20 years - drop infections don't spread like that!

14. You can't be protected from the virus by taking vinegar, sugarcane juice and ginger! These are for immunity not a cure.

15. Wearing a mask for long periods interferes with your breathing and oxygen levels. Wear it only in crowds.

16. Wearing gloves is also a bad idea; the virus can accumulate into the glove and be easily transmitted if you touch your face. Better just to wash your hands regularly.

17.  Immunity is greatly weakened by always staying in a sterile environment.  Even if you eat immunity boosting foods, please go out of your house regularly to any park/beach.
Immunity is increased by EXPOSURE TO PATHOGENS,  not by sitting at home and consuming fried/spicy/sugary food and aerated drinks.

From about 1500 BC to 1200 BC, the Mediterranean region played host to a complex cosmopolitan and globalized world-system. It may have been this very internationalism that contributed to the apocalyptic disaster that ended the Bronze Age. When the end came, the civilized and international world of the Mediterranean regions came to a dramatic halt in a vast area stretching from Greece and Italy in the west to Egypt, Canaan, and Mesopotamia in the east. Large empires and small kingdoms collapsed rapidly. With their end came the world’s first recorded Dark Ages. It was not until centuries later that a new cultural renaissance emerged in Greece and the other affected areas, setting the stage for the evolution of Western society as we know it today.  Professor Eric H. Cline of The George Washington University will explore why the Bronze Age came to an end and whether the collapse of those ancient civilizations might hold some warnings for our current society.

Considered for a Pulitzer Prize for his recent book 1177 BC, Dr. Eric H. Cline is Professor of Classics and Anthropology and the current Director of the Capitol Archaeological Institute at The George Washington University. He is a National Geographic Explorer, a Fulbright scholar, an NEH Public Scholar, and an award-winning teacher and author. He has degrees in archaeology and ancient history from Dartmouth, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania; in May 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree (honoris causa) from Muhlenberg College.  Dr. Cline is an active field archaeologist with 30 seasons of excavation and survey experience.

Our modern lives hinge on learning from a young age, but wouldn’t it be a lot easier if we first learnt how to learn and remember?

Anastasia Woolmer guides us on her journey from a physical to a mental athlete. After a career as a professional Ballet and Contemporary dancer, she completed a university degree with very little high school behind her. Like many of us, she studied without the benefit of memory techniques, just a lot of over preparation and late nights.  Anastasia discusses what a dramatic difference memory training has made on her life since then. We can all benefit immensely from directed memory skills and a little practice pays big dividends.  This talk reveals that combining the two types of fitness training – mental and physical – helps us to achieve the most out of life.

Anastasia is a two times Australian Memory Champion, is the first female to hold this title and has set several Australian memory records along the way. Anastasia is a 2 x Australian Memory Champion and holds several Australian memory records. She is both a physical and mental athlete, with an international career as a professional Ballet and Contemporary dancer. Her love of learning attracted her to memory sports as a path to absorb new information quickly and she now helps others to learn memory techniques. Anastasia is also uniquely able to demonstrate the mental imagery she uses during memorisation.

Anastasia believes combining both physical and mental fitness gives us the best chance for a happy and full healthy life. She knows that anyone can train themselves to perform remarkable memory feats and bypass slower conventional learning methods. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Joanne Rowling, born 31 July 1965, writing under the pen names J. K. Rowling and Robert Galbraith, is a British novelist, philanthropist, film producer, television producer and screenwriter, best known for writing the Harry Potter fantasy series. The books have won multiple awards, and sold more than 500 million copies, becoming the best-selling book series in history. They have also been the basis for a film series, over which Rowling had overall approval on the scripts and was a producer on the final films in the series.

Born in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, Rowling was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International when she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while on a delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990. The seven-year period that followed saw the death of her mother, birth of her first child, divorce from her first husband and relative poverty until the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was published in 1997. There were six sequels, of which the last, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was released in 2007. Since then, Rowling has written five books for adult readers: The Casual Vacancy (2012) and—under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith—the crime fiction novels The Cuckoo's Calling (2013), The Silkworm (2014), Career of Evil (2015), and Lethal White (2018).

Rowling has lived a "rags to riches" life story, in which she progressed from living on state benefits to being the world's first billionaire author. She lost her billionaire status after giving away much of her earnings to charity, but remains one of the wealthiest people in the world. She is the United Kingdom's bestselling living author, with sales in excess of £238M. The 2016 Sunday Times Rich List estimated Rowling's fortune at £600 million, ranking her as the joint 197th richest person in the UK. Time named her a runner-up for its 2007 Person of the Year, noting the social, moral, and political inspiration she has given her fans. In October 2010, Rowling was named the "Most Influential Woman in Britain" by leading magazine editors. She has supported charities, including Comic Relief, One Parent Families and Multiple Sclerosis Society of Great Britain, and launched her own charity, Lumos.

"Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert," begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert.

While astronomy is the science of exploring the world that is outside, meditation is the science of exploring what is inside. In this talk by Khurshed Batliwala,  he explores how Ancient Indian Scientists and Astronomers knew about the wonders of the outside world which modern day science is still catching up.

With a post graduate in Mathematics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Khurshed Batliwala, or Bawa as he is fondly known (a nick name that has stuck from his IIT days) is an extraordinary personality.

In his own words, he decided it was better to teach people meditation and make them happy rather than teach them mathematics and make them miserable and thus chose the unconventional and challenging career path as a faculty member of the Art of Living, sharing the vision of its founder, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, which is to see a smile on every face on the planet.

Khurshed Batliwala and Dinesh Ghodke,  Faculties of Art of Living and Authors of the best selling books Ready, Study, Go! and Happiness Express, make talks on how to deal with the most common problems that most of us face, which can be  effortlessly integrated into daily life.

CONGRATS!

“Salute the spirit of these 2 young nurses from Rajindra Hospital, Patiala who tested positive for Covid-19. This, however, did not dishearten them and the Government agreed to their request to appear for their exam from the isolation facility itself,” tweeted Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, sharing this picture of two nurses who appeared for their exam from the quarantine facility of Patiala’s Rajindra Hospital.

The two women, after contracting the virus, requested the state government to give them permission for taking the exams from the hospital they were admitted in. The nursing entrance exam, held on Sunday, June 21, to fill up 411 posts of staff nurses, was taken by the two candidates after the state government made provisions.

Kudos to their spirit!

Webinar on 'Corona Virus Pandemic: Looking through the Lens of Gandhi'

June 26, (Friday) from (IST) 10:00 a.m. to 13:30 p.m.
Gandhi viewed that avoiding disease is far superior than getting and curing it. Hence, he advocated that ‘it is important to be clean, control your diet, get substantial daily exercise and not take more medicines than you really need’. Plagues and pandemics also occurred during his time. He was seized of the matter as his writings suggest. He was a survivor of the spanish flu, which hit his family and close friends.

In this context, a National Webinar on ‘Novel Corona Virus-19: Looking through the Lens of Gandhi' is organized by the Mahatma Gandhi Chair on Decentralisation and Sustainable Development, Centre for Rural Management (CRM), Kottayam, Kerala on 26 June 2020 (Friday) from (IST) 10:00 a.m. to 13:30 p.m (GMT+5.30 hours) through an appropriate platform such as Google mate/ Cisco Webex/ Zoom.
