The 18th BRICS Summit is taking place in New Delhi today and tomorrow, with India holding the chair in 2026.
The grouping now has 11 members and, according to India's government, represents about 49.5% of the world's population, 40% of global GDP and 26% of global trade. �

The really interesting part is that India has tried to make BRICS more than a geopolitical talking shop.
During its chairship, more than 350 meetings and high-level engagements were held across 25 Indian cities, producing initiatives in agriculture, health, science, technology, education, trade and sustainability. �

India appears to be trying to turn BRICS from a loose political grouping into a practical cooperation platform for the Global South.
🌍 2. WORLD — BRICS FINDS COMMON GROUND DESPITE DEEP DIVISIONS
There was genuine uncertainty about whether BRICS members could agree on a joint declaration because of differences over the Middle East conflict.
They have now managed to do so.
The declaration expresses concern over the conflict, calls for maximum restraint and diplomacy, and stresses international law, civilian protection and uninterrupted global trade. �

This is significant because BRICS contains countries with very different geopolitical interests.
A fascinating question for the future:
Can a group this diverse become a genuine force for global cooperation—or will internal differences limit it?
🔬 3. SCIENCE WATCH — AI ENTERS THE LABORATORY
One of the most fascinating scientific developments this week is an AI model that attempts to predict which drugs may work best against an individual's triple-negative breast cancer.
Researchers trained the model using more than 38 million protein measurements and tested its ability to predict cellular responses to drugs. It achieved about 88% accuracy on drugs outside its training set in the reported experiments. �

This is not a replacement for doctors or clinical trials.
But it points toward something extraordinary:
AI may increasingly help doctors choose treatments according to the biology of an individual patient's tumour.
That is the beginning of genuinely personalised medicine.
🤖 4. AI WATCH — AI IS STARTING TO CHANGE MATHEMATICS
AI systems are increasingly being used not merely to calculate mathematics but to explore difficult mathematical problems and suggest new lines of reasoning.
Recent reports describe major advances by AI systems from several leading laboratories, including work on longstanding problems. Mathematician Terence Tao has suggested that mathematics could move toward an era of abundant computer-assisted proofs and discoveries. �

An AI-generated mathematical answer is not automatically a mathematical proof.
Human mathematicians still have to examine, verify and understand the reasoning.
That distinction is extremely important in this new age of AI.

not merely consumption of technology, but creation of technology.
💰 6. INDIA ECONOMY — A RECORD FOREIGN-EXCHANGE RESERVE
India's foreign-exchange reserves rose by about $45 billion in one week, reaching a record $785.7 billion as of September 4.

However, there is an important qualification: some of the inflow represents liabilities associated with deposits and other financial arrangements.
So:
Record reserves = very positive.
But record reserves do not automatically mean equivalent new national wealth.
That distinction is worth remembering.
🏦 7. RBI WATCH — WHY IS THE RBI DRAINING LIQUIDITY?
The Reserve Bank of India has announced a planned sale of ₹1 trillion ($10.47 billion) of government bonds beginning next week.
Why?
The banking system currently has an unusually large amount of surplus liquidity. The RBI wants to absorb some of that excess money and keep short-term interest rates under control, especially while elevated oil prices pose an inflation risk. �

There is an extraordinary common thread running through today's stories:

Are we becoming wiser as fast as we are becoming more powerful?
Technology can increase our capabilities enormously.
Wisdom determines how we use those capabilities.
