Tech Watch: How Denmark Is Turning Recycled Salt Into Clean, Grid-Scale Power

​When we think about energy storage, massive lithium-ion battery banks usually come to mind. But halfway across the globe in Esbjerg, Denmark, a pioneering clean-tech innovation is proving that the future of renewable energy might rely on something far simpler: molten salt.

​Developed by Danish startup Hyme Energy in partnership with engineering firm Sulzer, this breakthrough technology uses recycled hydroxide salts to solve one of green energy’s biggest hurdles—how to store intermittent power for when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing.

​Simple Salt, Massive Impact

​The concept behind molten salt energy storage is remarkably elegant:

  • Massive Thermal Storage: The system converts excess renewable electricity from Denmark's wind farms into high-temperature heat, storing up to 1 Gigawatt-hour (1 GWh) of thermal energy.
  • Powering Entire Cities: When dispatched strictly as electricity, a full system can supply enough power to serve roughly 100,000 households for up to 10 hours continuously.
  • Low Heat Loss: Because molten hydroxide salts retain high temperatures so efficiently, the system can preserve usable industrial heat for up to two weeks.

​Sustainability Built Into the Supply Chain

​Unlike standard batteries that rely on expensive, heavily mined metals, this system utilizes molten hydroxide salt—a abundant byproduct recycled directly from industrial chlorine production. The material is non-toxic, highly safe, and significantly cheaper than traditional battery components.

​Beyond electrical grids, the plant generates high-temperature industrial steam reaching up to 600°C. This allows energy-intensive industries, such as commercial food processors and manufacturing plants, to replace coal and natural gas boilers with pure, stored renewable heat.

​As global energy grids pivot toward solar and wind, large-scale thermal storage solutions like Denmark's molten salt system offer a practical, cost-effective path toward a zero-carbon future.
