This blog has become a sort of personal-cum-public diary. As for its contents, some are meant for me and my friends and relatives; others are for the public. This blog will have only positive, ennobling, elevating, encouraging and uplifting thoughts/ideas/materials. Whoever visits should feel happy and should be able to pick up some good ideas/thoughts/links. In short, "NOTHING NEGATIVE" is my motto.(Grateful thanks to Jon Sullivan and Public-Domain-Photos.com for the background photo)

NEW YEAR 2020
Until the 15th century Spain
was in many ways an unremarkable European country and for several centuries
been the object of conquest itself first by the Romans and then by the Moslem Moors
who both occupied much of the country for several hundred years.
But by the 15th century Spain
was a devoutly Christian and Catholic country and its monarchy then produced a
series of ambitious and powerful leaders. It was King and Queen Ferdinand and
Isabella who finally expelled the Moors in 1492, unleashed a bloody inquisition
and then funded the journey of the Italian Christopher Columbus to the New
World... a journey that was to change the fortunes of
Spain and the world forever.
The riches bestowed by the New
World would usher in a golden age for Spain not just making it the most
powerful nation in Europe but a global superpower. In this episode of Empire
Builders we explore ten sites that chart the rise of this crusading Catholic
empire.

Much is known about enslaved Africans once they arrived in the Americas
and Europe, but in this episode Zeinab Badawi looks at the impact on Africa
itself of one of the most evil chapters in human history: the trans Atlantic
slave trade. She travels to several countries to see how, where and why this
trade began in Cabo Verde in 1510. She meets a man on the Senegalese island of
Goree who for 35 years has been relating
the story of slavery to thousands of visitors. And leading academics tackle the
controversial subject of why some Africans helped sell their fellow Africans
into slavery.

Why did the Soviet Union
Collapse?
As the Iron Curtain fell, over
a dozen nations were finally freed from the heavy-handed grasp of the
once-powerful U.S.S.R. From its foundation in 1922 until its final demise in
1991, the Soviet Union and its allies made up an incredibly significant portion
of Europe - essentially filling out the entire Eastern side of the continent. A
global superpower at its peak, the U.S.S.R. somehow only lasted a short 70
years. How is this possible? And why, exactly, did the Soviet Union
collapse?...

The history of India written
during the colonial era begins with the Indus Valley Civilization. When this
civilization declined, Aryans had invaded or migrated to India who wrote Vedas.
In fact, we do not have any chronological history before 500 BCE that’s what
modern historians and archaeologists record. But the advanced research based on
archaeological, archaeo-astronomical and literary evidence suggests otherwise.
India's history is continuous since the beginnings of Holocene and we Indians
proudly call our history as ITIHASA....The word itihAsa splits as iti-ha-Asa
and means thus-verily-happened.
Vedic, Post-Vedic, Itihasa and
Purana texts record history - just in a form that is different than what is now
considered to be the norm. Today, the definition of History is that which was
introduced into India by the Colonial historians who just doubted our antiquity
without evidence. Much prior to that, the Rishis recorded chronological and
genealogical history so that future generations could benefit from its
learnings. Let us scientifically explore our chronological antiquity

The Maya - their soaring pyramids,
monumental cities and mythical mastery of astronomy and mathematics have
captured our imaginations and spurred generations of explorers into the jungles
of Central America on a quest to understand them. Lost World of the Maya
surveys their dramatic rise to prominence in the 'pre-classic era' of the Maya
as well as new evidence of the collapse of their civilization in the 800-900's
AD. Want even more Maya? Try Lost Treasures of the Maya on Disney+ https://www.disneyplus.com/series/los...

This episode of Ten Minute History (like a
documentary, only shorter) covers the situation in the Eastern Steppe and the
inter-tribal warfare there which saw the ascendancy of the Mongols. Led by
Genghis Khan they waged a series of wars which over the course of decades saw
the Mongol Empire become the largest contiguous empire in all of human history.
Of course, the empire soon fell into civil war and from that came Khubilai
Khan, whose policies earned him a reputation as a skilled and competent ruler.
Recommended Reading: John Man - The Mongol
Empire: Genghis Khan, His Heirs and the Founding of Modern China. This book is
a fantastic detailed overview of the empire and the Yuan dynasty. Has a great
chapter on the Mongol's legacy.
Morris Rossabi - The Mongols: A Very Short
Introduction. I always recommend these books but that's because they're great.
This one has some issues with its structure but for its price point it's
phenomenal.
