Chennai Day commemorates the founding of the city on 22 August 1639, when the British East India Company, represented by Francis Day and Andrew Cogan, obtained a strip of land from the local Nayak ruler Damarla Venkatadri Nayak. This agreement led to the construction of Fort St. George in 1640, around which the modern city of Chennai gradually developed.
Originally known as Madras, the city was officially renamed Chennai in 1996. Today, Chennai is celebrated as one of India's oldest modern cities and is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, classical music and dance, historic temples, Marina Beach, educational institutions, thriving industries, and warm hospitality.
