Inspired by the now viral video of a foreign traveller calling it a "brutal" but unforgettable 4-day sleeper ride, I decided to dig deep into what makes this journey legendary.

What is the Vivek Express?

Train numbers 15905 / 15906 - The Dibrugarh – Kanyakumari Vivek Express is officially India's longest train route.

• Distance: 4,189 to 4,273 km depending on the source   • Duration: Around 75 to 85 hours - that's 3 nights and 4 days   • Stations: 59 halts • Coaches: 19 coaches • Frequency: Twice a week - Tuesdays and Saturdays   • Timing: Departs Dibrugarh around 7:25 PM and reaches Kanyakumari on the 4th day at 10:00 PM   

It was announced in the 2011-12 Railway Budget and launched in honour of Swami Vivekananda's 150th birth anniversary. The name Vivek itself is a tribute to the monk who travelled the length and breadth of Bharat.  

The Route - 9 States, One Epic Tapestry

This is not just a train ride; it's a geography lesson on wheels. The train travels through:

Assam, Nagaland, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu  

You start in the tea gardens and misty Brahmaputra plains of Dibrugarh. By day two you are in the crowded energy of Howrah and Bhubaneswar. Day three brings the coastal stretch of Andhra - Vijayawada, Rajahmundry - where the landscape turns to paddy and palm. And on the final day, you roll through Kerala's backwaters into Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of mainland India where three seas meet.

Major cities en route include Guwahati, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Vijayawada and Thiruvananthapuram.

Why The "Brutal" Tag?

That YouTube video you shared hits a nerve because it's honest. As one photographer who spent 5 days on it said: "It’s fresh and beautiful and repulsive at the same time".  

Here is the real picture:

1. The Beautiful: Chai vendors at 5 AM in a foggy Assam station, kids waving at every crossing, endless conversations with soldiers, students, monks and farmers sharing the same berth. You watch India change its language, its food, its dress every 300 km.

2. The Brutal: Sleeper class on a 75-hour journey is not for the faint-hearted. Vloggers have pointed out littered floors and soiled berths, overcrowding, heat, and the constant hum and sway that never lets you sleep properly. In summer, it's a test of endurance.

But that is exactly what makes it a story.

My Take for Fellow Travellers

If you are planning this - and I say everyone should, at least once - here are my notes:

• Book 3AC if you can. Sleeper is an experience, but for 4 days, a bit of comfort goes a long way. • Pack light, but pack smart. Bedroll, power bank, water bottle, dry fruits, wet wipes are non-negotiable. • Don't try to do the whole stretch in one go if you are not used to long travel. You can break journey at Visakhapatnam or Ernakulam. • Keep your camera ready. The sunrise over the Chilika Lake in Odisha and the sunset entering Kerala are worth the entire ticket. 

The Vivek Express was started for a very human reason - so that a jawan from Kerala posted in Arunachal doesn't have to change four trains to go home. Today, it has become a pilgrimage for travel lovers.

It is not a luxury cruise. It is India itself - chaotic, crowded, colourful, and completely captivating.
