Every year, the world uses 35 billion barrels of oil. This massive scale
of fossil fuel dependence pollutes the earth, and it won’t last forever. On the
other hand, we have abundant sun, water and wind, which are all renewable
energy sources. So why don’t we exchange our fossil fuel dependence for an
existence based only on renewables? Federico Rosei and Renzo Rosei describe the
challenges.
Lesson by Federico Rosei and Renzo Rosei, directed by Giulia Martinelli.

“Matter has a counterpart
called antimatter. Each kind of fundamental particle of matter has an
antimatter nemesis lurking in the shadows. And true to science-fiction

If you were to take a coffee cup, and break it in half, then in half
again, and keep carrying on, where would you end up? Could you keep on going
forever? Or would you eventually find a set of indivisible building blocks out
of which everything is made? Jonathan Butterworth explains the Standard Model
theory and how it helps us understand the world we live in.

Explore how geothermal energy— the heat in the Earth’s crust— is being
used to create renewable electricity and power.
--
While the weather in Iceland is often cold, wet, and windy, a nearly
endless supply of heat bubbles away below the surface. In fact, almost every
building in the country is heated by geothermal energy in a process with
virtually no carbon emissions. So how exactly does this renewable energy work?
Jean-Baptiste P. Koehl explores the two primary models for harnessing the
planet's natural heat.
Lesson by Jean-Baptiste P. Koehl, directed by Charlotte Arene.

Bitcoin mining is the process
of updating the ledger of Bitcoin transactions known as the blockchain. Mining
is done by running extremely powerful computers (known as ASICs) that race
against other miners in an attempt to guess a specific number.
The first miner to guess the
number gets to update the ledger of transactions and also receives a reward of
newly minted Bitcoins (currently the reward is 12.5 Bitcoins).
Today, in order to be
profitable with Bitcoin mining you need to invest heavily in equipment, cooling
and storage. It’s not possible to mine profitably with a PC or a GPU at home.
You can calculate your profitability using a Bitcoin mining calculator.

Bitcoin is the first
decentralized digital currency. All Bitcoin transactions are documented on a
virtual ledger called the blockchain, which is accessible for everyone to see.
Bitcoin gives you complete
control over your money, unlike other assets you own which are regulated by
banks and governments. As bitcoin gains more popularity, more and more places
accept it as a payment method.
That's Bitcoin in a nutshell.

Take a journey into the respiratory system to see how ventilators bypass
constricted airways and help damaged lungs send oxygen to the body.
---
In the 16th century, physician Andreas Vesalius described how a
suffocating animal could be kept alive by inserting a tube into its trachea and
blowing air to inflate its lungs. Today, Vesalius’s treatise is recognized as
the first description of mechanical ventilation— a crucial practice in modern
medicine. So how do our modern ventilators work? Alex Gendler explains the
life-saving technology.

Studying morphology, i.e. the shape of our galaxy ( the milky way), is a
difficult thing to do.
Why is that? Because we don't have directed eyesight of our galaxy.
From our position inside the Milky Way, much of its size, contents, and
three-dimensional structure is really tricky to figure out. What we currently
know is that we live in a spiral galaxy.

Follow me in this video to get to know more about our fantastic galaxy
and its new...Cattail!
Astronomers discovered a new colossal structure, and named it “Cattail”.
It's huge.
But it is such a wonder. Before seeing what we know about it, let's talk
a bit about the structure of our galaxy: it will help us understand better why
this discovery is so peculiar.
The Milky Way Galaxy’s structure is fairly typical of a large spiral
system. This structure can be viewed as consisting of six separate parts: (1) a
nucleus, (2) a central bulge, (3) a disk (both a thin and a thick disk), (4)
spiral arms, (5) a spherical component, and (6) a massive halo. Some of these
components blend into each other.
At the very centre of the Galaxy lies a remarkable object—a massive
black hole surrounded by an accretion disk of high-temperature gas.
