Websites to Watch-13: 750 Words.com

750 Words.com

What is this site about?

It's about learning a new habit: Writing. Every. Day.

I've long been inspired by an idea I first learned about in The Artist's Way called morning pages. Morning pages are three pages of writing done every day, typically encouraged to be in "long hand", typically done in the morning, that can be about anything and everything that comes into your head. It's about getting it all out of your head, and is not supposed to be edited or censored in any way. The idea is that if you can get in the habit of writing three pages a day, that it will help clear your mind and get the ideas flowing for the rest of the day. Unlike many of the other exercises in that book, I found that this one actually worked and was really really useful.

I've used the exercise as a great way to think out loud without having to worry about half-formed ideas, random tangents, private stuff, and all the other things in our heads that we often filter out before ever voicing them or writing about them. It's a daily brain dump. Over time, I've found that it's also very helpful as a tool to get thoughts going that have become stuck, or to help get to the bottom of a rotten mood.

Websites to Watch-6: "Poetry 180"

I came across this interesting portal last week. It is hosted by the Library of Congress, USA. Though it says "a poem a day for American schools", anybody who loves poetry will find it interesting. To know more about it, I reproduce the Introduction given by Billy Collins, Former Poet Laureate of the United States:

"Welcome to Poetry 180. Poetry can and should be an important part of our daily lives. Poems can inspire and make us think about what it means to be a member of the human race. By just spending a few minutes reading a poem each day, new worlds can be revealed.

Poetry 180 is designed to make it easy for students to hear or read a poem on each of the 180 days of the school year. I have selected the poems you will find here with high school students in mind. They are intended to be listened to, and I suggest that all members of the school community be included as readers. A great time for the readings would be following the end of daily announcements over the public address system.

Listening to poetry can encourage students and other learners to become members of the circle of readers for whom poetry is a vital source of pleasure. I hope Poetry 180 becomes an important and enriching part of the school day".

Give it a try, you will like it; I liked it.

Websites to Watch-5 : Website on Higher Studies – Edex, The New Indian Express

A new portal, www.uniguru.com, has been launched to help students aspiring to study abroad.

Launched by Hotcourses, a UK-based publisher of education guides, the portal promise to reveal the real issues about the universities, which were not covered in the prospectus.

Primarily a website for Indian students, it would have information about management, engineering and medical courses offered by institutions in the USA, the UK, Singapore and Australia.

The site, which contains reviews from students already pursuing courses at various universities around the world, had allowed existing students to post their reviews, including video diaries and photographs.

The review postings includes details about accommodation, the quality of a course, the weather, city life, getting a visa, working in the UK and the cost of living.

The website offers peer-to-peer advice on over 100,000 courses at 808 institutions in UK, US, Singapore and Australia. The company also plans to launch a similar site for domestic universities in India next year.

Websites to Watch-2 : 'The Nobel Prize : Offical Website'

The Official Nobel Prize Website

This is another interesting website which I like. I am reproducing information about the website from the website itself ('About Nobelprize.org and Nobel Web').
Nobelprize.org is the official web site of the Nobel Foundation. Here you will find information for every Nobel Prize since 1901, including the Nobel Laureates' biographies, Nobel Lectures, interviews, photos, articles, video clips, press releases, educational games and more.

Nobelprize.org (http://nobelprize.org/) is a registered trademark, and is produced, managed and maintained by Nobel Web. Nobel Web AB is a Swedish corporate entity and subsidiary of the Nobel Foundation Rights Association, a non-profit association managing the rights of the Nobel Foundation. Alongside its own productions, Nobel Web AB processes and publishes information from the Nobel Foundation, the Nobel Prize-Awarding Institutions, the Nobel Laureates and other Nobel Prize-associated entities. Its dedicated staff is assisted by advisers, whose knowledge and expertise about Nobel Prize topics and the Nobel Laureates' achievements ensure the reliability and quality of the information presented at Nobelprize.org.

Nobelprize.org provides comprehensive, first-hand information about the Nobel Prize and Nobel Laureates in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace starting in 1901, as well as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel and the Economics Laureates starting in 1969. Visitors to the site also get to know about Alfred Nobel, the man behind the Nobel Prize.

As the official online information source for the Nobel Prize, visitors learn about the names of the year's Nobel Laureates just seconds after the prize announcements are made by the Nobel Prize-Awarding Institutions in October. Aside from the press releases, information about the Nobel Laureates and their work is made available through interviews, Nobel Lectures, speeches, articles, and more.

In December, as the Nobel Laureates arrive in Stockholm and Oslo to receive the Nobel Prize Medal, Diploma and prize amount, Nobelprize.org follows their activities and presents them online. Visitors can also watch the Nobel Laureates present their Nobel Lectures, and experience the magic of the Nobel Prize Award Ceremonies through live web casts. Those who have missed these events can watch them afterwards through on-demand videos.

Through the assistance of foundations, corporate sponsors and educational bodies, Nobel Web AB produces interactive, multimedia documents aimed at inspiring young people to learn more about the achievements of the Nobel Laureates. These are rapidly becoming extremely popular resources for teachers and students.
