Asia’s most beautiful railway line? The “Main Line” cuts through tea plantations and jungle, then passes Buddhist temples and relicts of the British Empire.

In the 19th century the British built a railway in what was then their colony of Ceylon. Their idea was to transport goods such as tea from the highlands to the port of Colombo. Today it’s mainly only locals and tourists who use the so-called "Main Line." The route is considered one of the most picturesque in the whole of Asia.

Our trip takes us from the capital, Colombo, to Ella in the highlands. Our first stop is one of the country’s largest elephant orphanages. And then on to Kandy, the former capital of the Singhalese kingdom. The city is home to the famous Temple of the Tooth, which is said to house the Buddha’s top left canine. The train then winds its way further up into the highlands. We watch tea pickers at work and go to a tea factory to discover where the aroma comes from. Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka’s highest town at an altitude of almost 1900 meters, where a racecourse still brings the colonial era back to life. The stations have also retained their own colonial charm: in 1901, a signaling system was set up to make the long journey safer. And those suffering from the altitude can catch their breath at the final stop, the spa in Ella.

USEFUL TIPS : MERGER OF BANKS & CONSEQUENT CHANGES

From 01-04-2020, the following banks are getting amalgamated.

1. Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India with Punjab National Bank.

2. Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank with Union Bank of India.

3. Syndicate Bank with Canara Bank.

4. Allahabad Bank with Indian Bank.

Thus, 10 Banks will become 4 Banks.

I suggest that you approach your bank before 24th of this month and take necessary action for these purposes.

(a) Find out the formalities to be completed, if any

(b) Issuance of Form 16-A for F.Y.2019-20 (A.Y. 2020-21)

(c) Change of ECS arrangements for Utility Payments and receiving credits into your running account.

(d) Find out if your existing ATM cum Debit card will be functional from 01-04-2020.

(d) Link your new account with your Demat Account for Shares & Mutual Funds.

(e) If you have a Credit Card issued by any of the banks now being merged with another, apply for a new one immediately because already the credit cards you hold are getting disabled.

(f) If you receive your Salary or Pension through any of the banks merged, make alternate arrangements.

(g) If have given any Standing Instructions for Utility Payments, Loan EMIs, RD Instalments, Credit Card payments etc., make alternate arrangements within 10 days.

(h) If your have a Safe Deposit Deposit Locker with the bank being merged, then you may have to approach the Acquiring Bank for allotment of a fresh locker.

(i) Your Service Charges will vary.

(j) I understand the existing interest rates on your Deposits and Loans will continue, for the rest of their contracted term, without any change.  Nevertheless, check and get it confirmed.

(k) In case of Mortgage of immovable properties, assignment of shares/LIC policies, enquire their future fate.

(l) If you have taken any Insurance Policy through your bank for Life/Health, enquire with regard to their further validity and future servicing.

Before visiting your bank, list out the jobs to be done and take necessary papers/documents/passbooks/cards with you and visit the bank in the post lunch session.

Do not postpone your work till the last moment.

On 27th of this month, there may be a Bank strike.

28th and 29th are bank holidays in view of 4th Saturday and Sunday.

30th and 31st, bank staff will be busy with their annual closing of accounts and will be under immense pressure for recovery of loans.

Plan well in advance.   All the best.

Maria Popova has written for amazing outlets like The Atlantic and The New York Times, but I find her most amazing project to be BrainPickings.org.

Founded in 2006 as a weekly email to seven friends, BrainPickings now gets more than 5 million readers per month (!). I read very few blogs regularly, but BrainPickings is one of the few that makes the cut. It’s a treasure trove.

In this in-depth conversation, we cover just about everything: how it happened, her workflow, how she writes (and workarounds to problems), how her site generates revenue, her workouts, and many more details. If you want to know the habits of a hyper-productive person, this episode is for you.

An international team of scientists have accidentally enhanced a plastic eating enzyme in a discovery that could change our relationship with plastic forever. The breakthrough, if scaled up, could lead to plastic being broken down into its original components and formed into plastic items again, removing the need for making more of the material.

With over 1 million plastic bottles sold a minute and at the current rate plastic set to outweigh fish in the oceans by 2050, plastic pollution is an environmental menace that has been dubbed a 'planetary crisis' by the United Nations. Despite the huge challenge,
Professor John McGeehan who headed the research believes the findings could turn the tide, "I think there's been a huge amount of doom and gloom stories around plastics and justifiably because it's a terrible environmental scourge. But this is a story where we've got some hope that we can actually put together."

The research was based on a 2016 discovery in a waste facility in Japan of a bacterium that had evolved to eat plastic. During the teams attempt to understand the how the enzyme evolved they made alterations which inadvertently led to the enzyme eating plastic 20% faster than before.

VICE News travels to the seaside city of Portsmouth in the UK to meet the man behind the discovery and what it might mean for a world being poisoned by plastic.
