In April of 2019, I spent ten incredible days exploring the cities of Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou in China. It was my second trip to China in four years – I had first traveled to the country in 2015 with my dad. During that trip, I explored Shanghai, Beijing, and Xi’an. I couldn’t wait to explore more of Shanghai and check out Suzhou and Hangzhou for the very first time!

After arriving in China following nearly 24 hours of travel from Miami, I still needed to get into the city of Shanghai. The fastest way to do that is to take the Shanghai Maglev, which is the fastest train in the world and travels at speeds up to 268 miles per hour! It operates by magnetic levitation and is the first and only commercially operated Maglev train in the world. It’s something you must experience when you visit Shanghai!

This train only takes 8 minutes to get from the airport to Shanghai. It’s been running for almost 20 years. I saw a similar Maglev train in development during my trip to Japan in January of 2019. I was so excited to ride it!

The train would take me to a station in the center of Shanghai, where you can catch the metro line or buses. The ticket costs 50 Yen for regular economy and 100 Yen for VIP. There’s a new train every 15-20 minutes, so you never have to wait long for one.

I took VIP and was alone in the car. There’s a monitor on the ceiling that shows you how fast you’re going. I kept watching the numbers go up as we picked up speed and soon the buildings and scenery outside were zipping by! This Maglev train is so much quieter than the bullet train I rode in Japan. All I could hear was a gentle hiss!

Once I made it to the station, I’d have to get an Uber or use the metro or bus, but that was okay because this experience was worth it! It’s super luxurious and there are no servers because the ride is so short.

I could actually feel the car swaying as the train turned. I had never felt anything like it in my life. You definitely need to stay seated while the Maglev train is moving. Otherwise, you could hurt yourself!

We maxed out at about 401 km/hour, or about 249 miles per hour. I wasn’t sure why we never reached the peak speed, but it was fine. Something really great about the Maglev is that it’s super easy to find. After you go through Immigration, you see Maglev signs everywhere that point you in the right direction, so just follow them and you’ll find a ticket counter, where you pay, and then you go down to the platform!

And just like that, my first Maglev ride was at an end! I couldn’t wait for Japan to get this train, which would cut the travel time from Tokyo to Osaka to just 67 minutes.

From there, I wanted to catch an Uber to my apartment in People’s Square, which is one of the main squares in Shanghai. I’m familiar with the area and it only cost me $30 per night. But unfortunately, there is no Uber, so I had to catch a taxi instead.

I had to meet up with a fan from Sweden at a local camera mall to buy a new lens because my lens and camera broke the previous day. The traffic was really bad and I only had an hour and a half to get to the store. We finally got there after an hour. Luckily I knew they had the lens I needed because my friend Nea from Stockholm told me it was there!

I got my lens at the camera mall! The lens made such a huge difference! From there, Nea and I took a taxi and she told me the street food in Shanghai is gone due to sanitary concerns. But there are still hole-in-the-wall eateries.

I arrived in People’s Square and had to search to find my Airbnb. I finally found it and headed up to the top level to get to my tiny studio apartment. It had a super low ceiling and was hard to get to with the luggage! But it was everything I needed: a place to leave my stuff and a place to sleep at night, so it was perfect for me!

What an adventure! I hope you enjoyed coming along on my first Maglev train ride and my journey through Shanghai! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food content!

HISTORY NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN!

Some history not to be forgotten
(..as received from Rahul Banerjee)👇

Thought provoking....*From a FB post by Rahul Banerjee*

“If India pokes its nose in Pakistan, US will not keep its trap shut. India will be taught a lesson”
- Richard Nixon.

“India regards America as a friend. Not a boss. India is capable of writing its own destiny. We know and are aware how to deal with each one according to circumstances”
- Indira Gandhi

The year was 1971 and the month November.

Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi articulated these exact words sitting with the U.S. President Richard Nixon in the White House, while maintaining an eye-to-eye contact.

The said event was narrated by the then Secretary of State and NSA, Henry Kissinger in his autobiography.

That was the day when the Indo-U.S. joint media address was cancelled by Indira Gandhi who walked away from the White House in her own inimitable style.

Kissinger, while ushering Indira Gandhi into her car, had commented, "Madam Prime Minister, don't you feel you could have been a little more patient with the President".

Indira ji replied, "Thank you, Mr. Secretary, for your valuable suggestion. Being a developing country, we have our backbones straight - & enough to fight the atrocities. We shall prove that days are gone to rule any nation far from thousands of miles”

Thereafter.. as soon as the Air India Boeing touched the Palam runway in Delhi, Indira Gandhi summoned the leader of opposition, Atal Behari Vajpayee to her residence immediately.

Post an hour of discussion behind closed doors, Vajpayee was seen hurrying back. It was thereafter known that Atal Ji would be representing India at the United Nations.

Donald Paul of BBC had jumped in with a question to Vajpayee, "Indira ji regards you as a staunch critic. In spite of that, are u sure you'd be at the United Nations shouting your throat (voice) out in favour of the Incumbent Government?”

Vajpayee had a repartee.. "A rose adorns a garden, so does a Lily. Each is beset with the idea that they are individually the most beautiful. When the garden falls in a crisis, it's no secret that the guarden has to safeguard its beauty as one. I have come today to save the garden. This is called Indian Democracy."

The resultant history is all known to us.

America sent 270 paton tanks to Pakistan. They called the world media to demonstrate that these tanks were produced under exclusive technology, and are/were thus indestructible. The intention was very clear. This was a warning signal to the rest of the world that no one should help India.

America did not stop here.
Burma-Shell the only U.S. company supplying oil to India, was told to stop. They were sternly told by U.S. not to deal with India anymore.

India's history thereafter was only about fighting back.
Indira Gandhi's incisive diplomacy ensured oil came in from Ukraine.

A battle that lasted just a day destroyed these  270 paton tanks. The destroyed  tanks were brought into India for demonstration. The hot deserts of Rajasthan still stands as a witness where U.S. pride was decimated.

A war that lasted eighteen days thereafter culminated into capturing 1.5 lakhs POWs from Pakistan.

Mujibar Rahman was released from Lahore Jail.

The month was March - Indira Gandhi recognized Bangladesh as an independent nation in the Indian Parliament.

Vajpayee addressed Indira Gandhi as “Maa Durga”

These events had a packet of long lasting manifested fallouts.

—India's own oil company, viz. Indian Oil came into being.
—India expressed itself as a nation of strength in the eyes of the world.

—India led the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) from the front.
Its leadership was unquestioned.

Times and events of such strength did get submerged into the great depths of yore.

Truthful history till date remains as a baton.

India has treaded fifty years hence. There is a sense of tiredness.

Democracy finds itself lonely as a word in the lexicon.

The opposition is no longer part of democracy anymore.

The voices, if not in toe, are regarded as voices of evil.

BEAUTIFUL THOUGHTS

Very truly said -

Martina Navratilova was once asked, “How do you maintain your focus, physique and sharp game even at the age of 43?"

She gave a humble reply, “The ball doesn’t know how old I am”.

You need to stop yourself from stopping yourself. Every game in life is actually played on a 6 inch ground – the space between your two ears.

We don't live in bungalows, duplexes or flats. We live in our mind which is an unlimited area. Life is great when things are sorted and uncluttered there.

Keeping the mind messy with hatred growing on the table, regrets piling up in corner, expectations boiling in kitchen, secrets stuffed under the carpet and worries littered everywhere ruins this real home.

The key factor to performing well in life and in every arena, is the ability to control the quality and quantity of your “internal dialogue”. Performance is potential minus internal interference.

Live in peace, not in pieces.

JOKE OF THE DAY!

Joke of the Day........

One day, in my hurry to leave,
I couldn't find the lock, so I wrote "COVID 19 POSITIVE" on the door and left.
😄

When I came back, I saw that the inside was empty, my Corona notice has disappeared.
And instead, hung another notice: *Disinfection done. Everything cleaned.*
😁😁😂😂

FANTASTIC FACTS : WHY ARE 96,000,000 BLACK BALLS ON THIS RESERVOIR?

WHY ARE 96,000,000 BLACK BALLS

ON THIS RESERVOIR?

I took a boat through 96 million black plastic balls on the Los Angeles reservoir to find out why they're there. The first time I heard about shade balls the claim was they reduce evaporation. But it turns out this isn't the reason they were introduced.

Huge thanks to LADWP for arranging this special tour for me. Next time let's put the GoPro on the submersible!

The balls are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) which is less dense than water so they float on the surface of the reservoir even if they break apart. They are 10cm (4 inches) in diameter and contain about 210ml of water. So the main reason they are on the reservoir is to block sunlight from entering the water and triggering a chemical reaction that turns harmless bromide into carcinogenic bromate. This effect occurs with prolonged exposure to bromate so regulators insist that levels be kept below 10 microgram per liter on average over a 12 month period.
