In a robot lab at TEDGlobal, Raffaello D'Andrea demos his flying quadcopters: robots that think like athletes, solving physical problems with algorithms that help them learn. In a series of nifty demos, D'Andrea show drones that play catch, balance and make decisions together -- and watch out for an I-want-this-now demo of Kinect-controlled quads.

My first full animated infographic and the largest project I have ever taken on. 4 months of researching, calculating, writing, illustrating, animating, and editing.

Climate change is a real and serious issue. In this animated infographic we dive into the science behind human accelerated climate change, how it is affecting our planet, why we need to act on this issue, and how you as an individual can contribute to the solution.

HOW DO VENTILATORS WORK? -

Take a journey into the respiratory system to see how ventilators bypass constricted airways and help damaged lungs send oxygen to the body.

---

In the 16th century, physician Andreas Vesalius described how a suffocating animal could be kept alive by inserting a tube into its trachea and blowing air to inflate its lungs. Today, Vesalius’s treatise is recognized as the first description of mechanical ventilation— a crucial practice in modern medicine. So how do our modern ventilators work? Alex Gendler explains the life-saving technology.

SCIENCE WATCH : FULLERENES

On this day, 5 September 1985, fullerenes were generated by scientists for the first time. Robert Curl Jr, Sir Harold Kroto and Richard Smalley were awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discovery.

Carbon is an element that can assume a number of different forms. In nature, for example, graphite and diamonds appear. In 1985 Harold Kroto, Robert Curl, and Richard Smalley irradiated a surface of graphite with laser pulses so that carbon gas was formed. When the carbon gas condensed, previously unknown structures with 60 and 70 carbon atoms were formed. The most common structure had 60 carbon atoms arranged in a sphere with five and six edges. The structures were called fullerenes in honour of architect Buckminster Fuller, who worked with this geometric shape. The structure is also called Buckminsterfullerene or a Buckyball.
