The discovery of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) was made remarkably quickly by researchers Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier, who were awarded the 2008 Medicine Prize for their work.
In late 1982, they were alerted to an alarming epidemic which they decided to investigate. By January 1983, they had discovered HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
They published their findings in the journal Science in May 1983; in 1985 the first commercial blood test to detect HIV became available.
This discovery has been crucial in radically improving treatment methods for people living with HIV.
