THE SOLAR PLANE THAT FLEW AROUND THE WORLD WITHOUT FUEL
In an era dominated by noisy jet engines and fossil fuels, a slender, feather‑light plane glided into history — powered not by kerosene, but by sunlight.Solar Impulse 2, built in Switzerland, became the first aircraft to circumnavigate the globe without using a drop of fuel.
Designed and piloted by visionaries Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, this breakthrough aircraft flew more than 40,000 kilometres across continents and oceans, proving that clean energy can do far more than light up homes — it can take flight.
A Marvel of Solar Engineering
The aircraft stretched wider than a Boeing 747 but weighed barely more than a family car. Over 17,000 solar cells lined its wings, capturing the Sun’s energy to power four silent electric motors. During the day, it flew directly on sunlight; by night, it cruised on power stored in advanced lithium batteries — a delicate dance of technology and patience.
A Journey Across the Sky
Starting from Abu Dhabi in March 2015, Solar Impulse 2 touched down in Oman, India, Myanmar, China, Japan, and the United States, before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Europe and finally returning to Abu Dhabi in July 2016.
Each leg was a test of endurance:
Borschberg once flew five days and five nights nonstop over the Pacific from Japan to Hawaii — the longest solo flight in aviation history at the time.
Beyond the Flight — A Message for Humanity
This journey wasn’t just about records. It carried a message: the future of flight — and of our planet — can be clean, smart, and sustainable. The Solar Impulse team proved that renewable energy can power ambitious goals and inspire industries to innovate with lighter materials, efficient batteries, and quiet propulsion.Solar Impulse 2 didn’t carry passengers, but it carried hope — a hope that someday, aircraft may hum across the sky powered by nothing but the Sun, leaving behind only silence and inspiration.
“The pioneers of today will be the standard‑bearers of tomorrow — proving that the impossible is only the unattempted.” — Bertrand Piccard
And perhaps, as a nightly reminder to ourselves:
"I am a limitless being, with limitless possibilities. All limitations are self‑imposed."
