An artificial nose, similar to a dog's olfactory system, has been developed by Israeli scientists, so that it could sniff cancer at an early stage "efficiently".

A Wikipedia article on the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, mentions a team of scientists at UMass, led by Vincent Rotello, have developed a molecular nose that can detect and identify various proteins. The research appeared in the May 2007 issue of Nature Nanotechnology, and the team is currently focusing on sensors which will detect the malformed proteins made by cancer cells.
